Cost of Solar Panels in AB

Installing solar panels in Alberta will vary depending on your location, the size of the installation, and what degree of work is required for your exact property. Average solar installations in Alberta range from $2.00/W to $3.00/W although this may be shifted up or down depending on your specific project considerations. This works out to an average solar power installation cost in Alberta being approximately $10,000 to $20,000.

Larger systems can be installed at a more favourable rate than smaller systems due to the economies of scale. Solar cost is measured per unit of power ($/W) - the lower, the better.

Other factors that will affect your solar power system costs are the difficulty of installation, type of installation (roof vs ground mounted), your location within Alberta, and if any electrical work is required to make solar PV code compliant with your existing electrical infrastructure. Adding in batteries, although not required, will also add to your solar energy project total.

How solar energy works in AB

  • You purchase electricity from a private Retailer (there are dozens of them in AB). The Retailer facilitates electricity transfer to you through your local regions set Wire Service Provider (Epcor, Enmax, Fortis, ATCO or local REA)
  • Energy is used by your home first which offsets your electricity buy rate - $0.07 + ~$0.03/kWh (energy + T&D). If you generate your own energy, you are now saving money by not importing electricity.
  • If more energy is needed than the solar panels can supply, you will draw from the grid as you currently do. This process is fully automatic and there is no delay.
  • If excess energy is created, it is sold back to your Retailer for a credit on your next billing cycle. Energy is credited at the same rate you purchase it for ($0.07/kWh). This allows you to generate money by exporting solar electricity.
  • At night, you will draw electricity from the grid as you currently do.

Quick facts about solar panels in Alberta

  • Alberta homeowners pay approximately $0.07/kWh for energy, and another $0.01 to $0.05/kWh in variable distribution and transmission fees (yes solar offsets some of the transmission and distribution fees!)
  • Average AB home uses approximately 7,000kWh/yr
  • Alberta generates approximately 90% of its electricity from fossil fuels (~50/50 coal and natural gas depending on the year and time)
  • Alberta is one of the best places in Canada to install solar panels (far better than Germany, a global leader in solar installations)
